Thanks Matthias.  I did try the widget menu but it didn't help - only widgets that are marked as "uninstallable" can be removed this way, it seems.  With regard to ps, it doesn't look like widgets show up as processes, at least not that I could see.  I grepped for clock, fuzzy, and fuz and couldn't find it.

I did eventually resolve the issue by using Marek's suggestion in this thread, but I appreciate your taking the time to help.
