You might try running, in a konsole terminal, alsamixer (from the
alsa-utils package if it's not installed).  That gives you a "semigui" 
controlling your audio and you should be able to activate the mic and set 
volume from there, using arrow keys and the like.  If you aren't using 
pulse-audio, that will very possibly be enough.

Pulse-audio adds another layer that I'm not familiar with, however, so if 
you're running it, you'll likely need to find help from someone else.
