Thanks for answering. I don't know what has happened, but the whole of KDE4 seems to be a mess on the Acer, and I've gone back to KDE3 there. I'll have another go at sorting it out when I have a little more time. The ancient Packard Bell laptop soldiers on, producing a rock-steady KDE 4 as long as I only ask it to do one thing at once, but what can you expect from a 700 MHz Duron and 256MB RAM?
