kdm_greet can't read from core

Hello,
having some trouble with kdm: can't log in with it
except as root.
the message in /var/log/syslog says
"kdm_greet[5568]: Can't read from core"
xdm works fine so I can log in with that for non-root
users, OR I can change my system to start in runlevel
3 and then enter the command "startx", but kdm just
doen's work at all. I even tried creating a new kdm
config file with kdm_config.
I'm running Slackware -current.
Has any one else seen this message or know what it means?
