Use udev for that... a part of my /etc/udev/rules.d/10-local.rules: BUS=="scsi", SYSFS{model}=="iPod ", KERNEL=="sd*", NAME="ipod%n" the iPod will then always be /dev/ipod<partition_number>. Patrick.
