You can try installing the Packman version of Kaffeine. The new SuSE one is 
stripped from mp3 support (at least for ripping). I am using it without any 
trouble (SuSE 10.1 here). Also why use kaffeine for mp3 playback? Amarok is 
by far better there...

Compiling kaffeine is not a bad choice either... it is quite a 
straight-through process (if you have the corresponding -devel packages 
vailable).

About the dvd issue - check out to see what permissions are set on your device 
file (the one dvdrecorder points to).
