Is there another setting that's relevant? It does seem like it should be, but perhaps "Exclude message chats on current desktop" or similar? I'll do some more experimenting. FWIW, I'm running kopete 0.12.3 '(Using KDE 3.5.5 "release 45.2" openSUSE)' on SuSE 9.3. To me, this seems like something that they (the kopete developers) should try to make more obvious.
