I recently got a Kingston USB DataTraveler 1GB USB key. When I plug it into my Scientific Linux 4.4 system running kde 3.5.5 the "Storage Media" applet recognizes it as a "Hard Disk Volume" rather than a "Removable Medium" Since I don't usually have the Storage Media applet display hard disk partitions, I get no icon associated with the USB key. I have another USB key from Lexar that behaves as expected. I stick it in, a removable media icon appears on the panel (and desktop) and I get a window asking if I want to open it. With the Kingston key, I get the window, but no icon since I've specified that hard disk volumes shouldn't be displayed. I've tried to understand what the difference between the two keys is. It looks like the kernel and HAL are doing the right thing. fstab is being dynamically updated, both keys are being automounted. But the Kingston one is not recognized as removable, so I get no icon. Here are the entries in /var/log/messages for the two keys. They look identical to me except for the obvious details about vendor name, size, etc. For the Lexar, which IS properly recognized as a removable device: Jan 22 13:24:05 myhost kernel: usb 1-4.2: new full speed USB device using address 35 Jan 22 13:24:05 myhost kernel: scsi26 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices Jan 22 13:24:05 myhost kernel: Vendor: LEXAR Model: DIGITAL FILM Rev: /W1.
