turning off the status (?) pop-up in KMail

[KMail 1.91 in Fedora Core 4]

Occasionally KMail will have a mail-check hang, with the status indicator 
in the lower-right corner of the window sitting there forever. There's a 
button on it which will pop-up a larger status bar with a close button on 
it. If I use the close button, every subsequent mail check and message 
delete will pop up this bar again, until I stop and restart KMail.

How do I turn off the pop-up feature manually?
