KDE is using its own system so it can also apply it to remote files if 
required.

I am not sure how it exactly works.
I think if the access protocol supports MIME types itself, for example HTTP's 
content-type field, it will take that.
If it doesn't I think it first checks the file extension and then the file 
contents.

You can check the outcome of this by using the kfile command
