Ran export KDEDIR=/usr and get the same symptoms after restarting KDE.
It does look like it fixed my environment variables.
Here's some of my current environment variables:
tsuther@angrybutler2:/etc$ echo $XDG_DATA_DIRS
/usr/share:/usr/local/share:/usr/share
tsuther@angrybutler2:/etc$ echo $XDG_CONFIG_DIRS
/usr/etc/xdg
tsuther@angrybutler2:/etc$ echo $KDEDIR
/usr
tsuther@angrybutler2:/etc$
