I got KDE 3.4 up and running on my Gentoo box last night without a single
problem. For the most part I was pleased with the changes, things are
snappy and KHTML is rendering better than ever.

However, one of the primary reasons that I use KDE is because I love
Kate. What I do not love, however, is IDEAL mode. In fact, I hate it.
Traditionally I have run in tab page mode and can configure it to look
like so:

Has "Tab Page Mode" been completely removed from KDE 3.4?

Is there some other package or component I need to install to add that
functionality?

If it is removed is there anyone I can bribe to put it back?

Or is there an unofficial patch that adds this functionality?

Anyway, any help would be nice. It's a really annoying problem,
especially since there are so many other cool things in the new version.

That is under: Application -> Plugins in the Configure dialog.

So, if you don't have that feature, it is probably in: KDEAddOns. Did
you install the KDEAddOns package?

I have that installed, but I think you have "Tab Page Mode" mixed up with the "Tab Bar Extension" which are definitely not one in the same.

In the old ~/.kde/share/config/katerc there was the following option:

DefaultGUIMode=3

That's what set the mode instead of IDEAL mode. Restoring my old config file didn't work either.

I think that the change to the new toolbar configuration probably killed that, but you can make a feature request for something similar with the new XML based toolbar configuration system.

If you look at the link I made you'll notice things like the built in terminal, find in files, and projects don't show up anywhere. Only the filesystembrowser and the documents are available since they're all I use. Under IDEAL mode there is no way I know of to stack two items at the same time on the same side (see screenshot) and COMPLETELY hide things that I'm never going to use.

Sorry that I misunderstood your question. Do you mean that you would like to have: FileSystem Browser and Documents in the sidebar open at the same time and stacked like they were toolbars?

So I guess it just goes back to my original questions... except I'd like to add one more.

Is there a list more specific to kate somewhere?

You might have to contact the maintainer.
