Your system is probably misconfigured because you should need a LOT of apps open to have noticeable degradation.
Use a process monitor like kpm , ksysguard or top to see if any app is hogging the cpu or constantly accessing the disk. The makers of the nx (?) remote user software have a demo machine of much lower specs than your machine running KDE to 20 users over the internet and it is still impressive.
