Both Helvetica and Bitstream Vera Sans are True Type fonts.
If you have TrueType Helvetica, you would have purchased it. The Helvetica that comes with X is bit mapped.
You can also get Type 1 Helvetica with Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.x for Windows:
ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/acrobatreader/win/3.x/ar302.exe
Use WINE to unpack if you don't have Windows.
You need AFM files for Linux:
ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/type/win/all/afmfiles/900-960/950/
Remember to convert the font file names to ALL lower case with KRename before installing them!
