Re: kxkb shows Err

I have a similar problem, although the solution you describe doesn't work for me. the kxkb kicker icon displays "err" - I'm not sure what broke it, I *think* it happened after a dist-upgrade on my debian Sid install. Keyboard model is entered correctly, as well as 2 layouts.

The strange thing is that clicking on the kxkb icon still switches the layout - but kxkb thinks something has gone wrong and displays the "err" instead of the flag.

Trying to run the layout switch commands in a shell results in the following error message:

pavel@helium:~$ setxkbmap -model pc105 -layout gb -variant basic
Error loading new keyboard description
pavel@helium:~$ setxkbmap -model pc105 -layout bg -variant phonetic
Error loading new keyboard description
pavel@helium:~$

But, once again, the layout is changed - inspite of the error indicated.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Ok, I found the solution myself. I just had missed to choose a keyboard the. After chosing "generic 105 keyboard" everything worked again. yet, that's an usability issue. The other options should be greyed out before a keyboard type is chosen. Software must be intelligent enough to compensate the stupidity of us users.

Hi all, I have recently tried out the X window server from X.org (version 6.7.0) and needed to replace the existing /usr/X11R6 and /etc/x11 directories. But Of course I copied them to another location instead of overwriting them. Since I did't have any keymaps to choose from under the X.org server I decided to switch back and thus copied the original X server files back to their previous location. But since then, I cannot use the keymaps anymore. The Kxkb Icon shows an Err instead of the previous keymap-symbols. I recompiled Xfree, as well as kde in order to fix that problem but it was all in vain. The funny thing is that the setkbmap command shown for each of the keymaps perfektly works in the shell. I just enter them and press return and they take effect. Can anyone tell me how to solve this issue? Do I need to recompile any package to make kxkb work again? Please send a copy of your reply to momesana@xxxxxxxx Thanx in advance, momesana.
