I would like that the icon for compressed files would be only a slight variation of the one for the uncompressed file - e.g. the same icon, but a little squeezed out, thus preserving the graphical information about contents.
Compressed files are a slight variation on the same icon. They have: zip.png added to the MIME type icon for the file name without the 'gz' or 'bz2' extension.
Moreover, could file type recognition be based on the unix 'file' command, rather than on th file extension?
File recognition is not based ONLY on file extension. But, yes it doesn't always work and could use a little improvement.
