icons for compressed files

I would like that the icon for compressed files would be only a 
slight variation of the one for the uncompressed file - e.g. 
the same icon, but a little squeezed out, thus preserving the 
graphical information about contents.

Moreover, could file type recognition be based on the unix 'file' command,
rather than on th file extension?
