KDE runs with Knoppix so I assume that a basic KDE > environment should work fine at a decent speed. It sounds like a bit of overkill to install a huge environment like KDE, just for browsing. You could also try not installing any Desktop Environment at all, and only install Mozilla. Then you can open Mozilla and one terminal-window, use Mozilla to read Howto's and use the terminal window to experiment with whatever the how-to is about. Cheers!
