Since the Compaq NX7010 uses an Intel 855 chipset, the problem may be related to bug 69320 <http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=69320>. Try opening KMix, turning on the "Advanced" switch and looking for a switch called "External amplifier down". If it's on, turn it off and see if that helps.
