kcontrol -- missing all menu options

Hello all,
     This is an interesting problem.  I cannot see any of the text or menu
trees in kcontrol.  I can click around in the left hand pane, in
hopes to trigger something that will show up in the right had pane,
no luck!  It is as if kcontrol has become nothing more than a shell,
no info, nothing.
