Thanks a lot for the explanation.
That makes it loud and clear now. So right now intel_ddi_pre_enable()
still uses encoder->type to determine whether to call into
pre_enable_dp() or pre_enable_hdmi(). 
Shouldnt we change that to use crtc state output type instead as well?
Or do you plan to do in the next patch set?
