Depends on your Configuration.

If you want to use "." in Mailboxnames, you should use "unixhierarchysep: 
yes". Otherwise user.user@xxxxxxxxxx will be

user
... user@domain
... ... de

With unixhierarchysep enabled, the Path is user/user@xxxxxxxxxx

Then you should have virtdomains turned off.
