Other way around.  ptloader is an authorization mechanism.

I guess I'm not real clear on the steps that are taken and under what circumstances those steps are taken.

I think it goes:

Authentication
Authorization
access granted (given the two above passed muster)

I also currently believe that I can control how I authenticate as well as authorize and these two mechanisms can be different.

All of this is completely seperate from how things are stored and managed with regard to mailboxes_db and friends. (Looks like skiplist is the best until I get around to writing an LDAP connector).
