many things have become standard practice where they oughtn't have. One of these things is cross-site tracking.

The analytics package suggested - Matamoto - is restricted to local tracking only and the ietf's privacy policy is clear and not hugely evil. The benefit to the ietf is clear, namely that they will be able to glean useful information about how the web site is working for its intended audience. People who manage web sites need feedback in order to be able to do their jobs.

There's a balance of benefit of both parties going on here. Many other organisations tilt that balance towards themselves or inadvertently and worse still towards tracking agencies. This doesn't seem to be happening in this situation.
