This is getting a bit off-topic, but that said, my son is at the upper range of what we might think of as “Kids These Days”, and is a college professor, so he interacts with the actual Kids on a daily basis. He’s reported to me in conversation that at least anecdotally in his experience, the death of email is being greatly exaggerated.

I think the reason Kids These Days don't use email is as you say, that the design is wrong for an internet in which we can't trust other participants to be considerate. A properly designed email system would almost certainly get substantial uptake from the younger generation, but what we have at present competes poorly with federated social solutions.
