Coming back from vacation following IETF 96, I’m very happy to see this discussion and learn of the new rtg-open-source@xxxxxxxx list. I agree strongly with Melinda on the need for IETF participation in open source communities. The IETF hackathon has been pretty successful in terms of bringing open source communities to the IETF (e.g. OpenDaylight, OPNFV, ONOS, FD.io, RIOT, etc.). Its important to engage in the other direction as well. Regarding the concerns about time scales, I believe IETF work can keep pace such that it is relevant within open source projects. Working group drafts can and should be iterated along with open source code that implements/leverages these drafts. I attended FOSDEM for the first time earlier this year. It would be great to see more IETFers there in 2017. There was a new “classroom” devoted to SDN and NFV in 2016 that I expect will be a part of the 2017 program as well. IETFers could provide valuable contributions there as I’m sure in many other areas as well.
