If we had to be assessed on English skills, though, think what other assessments we could deploy as preconditions. We could give people tough examinations on their threshold for being drawn into pointless threads, devise a complex scale of condescension (and spark an exciting and ill-informed debate about whether that's different to making patronizing remarks), mandate a seeming inability to spot humour, and so on
- all useful skills for the IETF participant.
