Except that this would preclude use of portable/wireless microphones to let people engage in more effective conversation.

Even if there continues to be some sort of queue or other discipline to determine who speaks next, we need to get away from the habit of forcing people to walk through narrow rows of chairs and stand in a queue behind a fixed-location microphone in order to speak.
