So how many people here actually knew or worked with John... or what
he was working on? its a relevant question because there seem to be a
number of people speaking from authority... so how many of you were
around in the 1960's and 1970's at AI (either MIT or SU)?
My hand is raised. I was a grad student at Stanford in1962 (?) when
McCarthy arrived. He soon taught a LISP course, which I audited. I don't
think I ever found it appropriate to address him as "John", but he was
certainly a genial fellow, and he radiated intellectual energy and
excitement.
