For better or worse, there are certain meeting destinations that
are classified as boggles under many corporate travel policies.
A meeting in one of them tends to be one for which it is much
harder to get travel approval, especially in difficult times,
and it may be rejected entirely (often the default except for
sales and marketing types attending major "expositions".
For the US, Vegas almost always tops the list... or to fall
right after meetings on luxury cruise ships (for which there is
special, unfavorable, tax treatment).
Usually, that makes Vegas a bad idea. Reno is often better, but
sometimes tarred with the same brush.
In the hope of avoiding another long thread, I am not advocating
that sort of policy, nor do I believe it is a good idea. It may
even be completely irrational to the point of not being a useful
subject for debate. But it is real and has to be a
consideration if one does not want to exclude classes of
participants.
