	Apple's Mail is not RFC 1123 compliant then.  I seriously
	doubt that Apple can produce the design documentation that
	proves that they even thought about this.  If they can I'd
	like to see the justification.  It would be a interesting
	read.

              may exist valid reasons in particular circumstances to
              ignore this item, but the full implications should be
              understood and the case carefully weighed before choosing
              a different course.

2.  GENERAL ISSUES

   2.3  Applications on Multihomed hosts

      When the remote host is multihomed, the name-to-address
      translation will return a list of alternative IP addresses.  As
      specified in Section 6.1.3.4, this list should be in order of
      decreasing preference.  Application protocol implementations
      SHOULD be prepared to try multiple addresses from the list until
      success is obtained.  More specific requirements for SMTP are
      given in Section 5.3.4.

	And the longer people leave it the more likely it is that
	the service will be swamped as more and more clients have
	IPv6 transports.

	No.  There is no such requirement.  Just make sure the
	server sends ICMP or RST.  The client should move on
	to the next address after one RTT.

	UDP based applications may be more problematic but not
	always.
