Having spent the best part of a decade in the commercial world, I could make
some nasty ad hominem comments about how some people tend to focus on the
short term, and their particular interests, but why don't we just move on
past all that?

Most (all?) of us understand and accept that multi-homing, vendor
independence, etc are very desirable *capability* goals. However, whether PI
is the right *particular engineering mechanism* to reach those goals remains
questionable.
