I think that Ethernet, like the Web, are actually excellent COUNTER-examples. Ethernet is Alohanet with carrier-sense, collision-detect, exponential backoff. And, of course, it runs over wire rather than radio.
IMO, Ethernet and the Web represent (high quality) incremental work that had discontiguous impact.
The major part of the incremental work was systems-level synthesis of just the right set of features, at the right time.
