I think your experience is based on 2018 UASG EAI meeting in Guangzhou.

The new policy is that many western countries enjoy the 15 days visa free.  I think it includes Japan and Singapore too.

“ China will be 15-day visa-free for Australia, New Zealand and Poland from July 1st, 2024 to December 31st, 2025. b. 15 days visa free for citizens of France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Malaysia, Switzerland, Ireland, Hungary, Austria, Belgium, and Luxembourg has been extended until December 31, 2025.”

I hope that the policy can extend to 2026.

I think that USA and many countries can get 5 days on arrival visa from hongkong to Shenzhen. If 5 days expires, you can return to Hongkong and come to Shenzhen again. :)

Of course, getting the visa before departure is a best way.

It is certainly possible to fly to Hong Kong and take the train.  I have done it.  But most visitors still need a visa.  If your passport is from the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, or Japan, you need to get a visa before you leave.
