FWIW, one reason most alumni addresses are forwarding-only is that other orgs, like Apple and HP, offer educational discounts, but you need to send FROM a .edu address to qualify. 

There are other orgs that offer email addresses that are permanent and allow use as a “from” address, but - like working at Harvard - they’re only good until they’re not as well. There’s no such thing as truly “permanent”. Even buying a domain isn’t a guarantee AFAICT (I recall cases where domains were owned then “pulled back” for various reasons, including legal action).
