It's worse than a bad smell.  It's built-in obsolescence, and failure to use and support a vital standard.  It's absolutely NOT a decision that should be made without community input, probably even consensus.

It doesn't matter AT ALL if very few IETF participants currently use a mail service that supports IPv6.
