Hi Carsten

Thank you for the response (and the irony of sending the email on a non-business day is not lost on me!)

The problem is not necessarily the ‘listening’ but the ‘ideas’ – sometimes it currently feels that the ideas that are presented are on the basis of things that people have been discussing between themselves away from the IETF itself.

Yes we have side-meetings, pre-BoFs, BoFs, etc. but these two items in Liz’s email are key for me:

Do you have an idea, problem space, or proposal that IETFers and IRTFers should hear about?

Do you want to propose IETF or IRTF work but aren’t sure if your idea is ready or who else will be interested?

What this format offers is a safe space for someone who doesn’t know if their idea is valid, wants some feedback, wants to create a community-of-interest without having to form a side-meeting, BoF, etc.  It makes IETF a lot more inclusive for those who are new to the organisation or maybe want to propose something a little left-field or different.  Or just, as many do, feel quite intimidated by the nature of some of the sessions.

I do understand your point though about these presentations stimulating discussion for later in the week and yes, I think having the presentations available on-line is a must, but often discussions happen at the next IETF following a side-meeting/BoF or by email list so moving to the first business day would seem to be a possibility that broadens inclusion?

David

Hi David,

the point of HotRFC is to invite listeners to conversations many of which will happen during IETF week.
So a mid-week event would miss half of those.

Maybe making the recording available very quickly (same Sunday) can solve the problem that you described (and that I have a ton of sympathy for).

Grüße, Carsten
