NANOG has enough of a problem with this that they put a warning on their hotel registration pages: https://www.nanog.org/events/nanog-88/hotel-information/

Since we've been talking about finding accommodation for meetings, I thought I'd relay this scam warning from a colleague. There's no reason the IETF couldn't be targeted in this way. Forwarded with permission:

Kia ora everyone,

Haven't seen this mentioned anywhere... but I have now for the second time been targeted by a crowd called travellerpoint.org pretending to be a travel agent wanting to sort out my accommodation for a conference I'm planning to attend. They scrape names from the online participant list and match them up with some e-mail address from an address DB, and then spam you, cleverly evoking the impression that they are somehow connected to the event as an official travel agent, suggesting that if they don't hear from you, they will make a default reservation for you which will incur a cancellation fee if not used.

It's a known scam.

Cheers,

Ulrich
