The goal here is to interoperate, and we've squeezed all the interop advice blood from this turnip that there is to be squeezed.

But X.400 aside (we don't need to evaluate the wisdom or lack thereof of that document), the English word "Expires" is actually ambiguous, and the potential for misinterpretation is a big part of the problem with this proposal.  So I disagree that it is fairly obvious how it would apply to an email message.

I would prefer something closer to "Valid-Until".
