Colleges are businesses; they sometimes host *academic* meetings for reduced cost, but the IETF isn’t academic by a long shot.

Just like other places, they also often have required contract catering and A/V vendors, room configuration, security, and cleanup.

local campus they're a lot more than $75/night.

Colleges often also host events during the summer, e.g., summer language programs, sports competitions, etc.

Having run conferences at universities both in the US and overseas, they’re often not more economical than convention centers or large hotels.
