Generally the group hopes that the individual members all agree with such a trade-off, but particularly during a time of change, it can be difficult. We call it being polite.
Freedom of speech also gives us the right not to say things, if we feel that those things would be viewed as hostile. This is not self-censorship, but the exercise of a right. Politeness is the dial which shows us where that balance lies.
