The actual time that will result from this calculation depends on whose costs are being accounted for. If the owner of the equipment is able to externalize some costs (e.g. by passing the risk on to the customer), or by landfilling old units rather than paying to have them recycled, then this approach alone may not produce a result that is optimal for all participants.
