I never perceived that as a big problem.

Of course it's possible to run "xml2rfc --preptool" to generate an XML
document with section numbers inlined (see
<https://greenbytes.de/tech/webdav/rfc7998.html#part-numbering>), but of
course you wouldn't want to *edit* that.

At the end of the day, it's a choice of automatic and consistent section
numbering (what we have now), or having the authors do the numbering. I
prefer the former.
