Mostly links between data centers across the open Internet. Nothing fancy
AFAIK: SASL PLAIN over TLS with specific certs.

But some people insist on it even inside their data centers. I wasn't even
aware of this usage until I botched a change to our configuration metafile.
Nothing like a introducing bug to tell you wnat people are actually doing with
your stuff.
