If thinkpad-acpi didn't even load, the fan should be working in automatic
mode, shouldn't it?  Does your laptop require more aggressive fan cooling
(likely because it needs cleaning and thermal interface repair)?  Does it
refuse to start the fan without thinkpad-acpi?

Well, it shouldn't do that.  Save your kernel .config somewhere, do a "make
mrproper", copy the old .config back, "make oldconfig", and then try
rebuilding.
