Heya, I am no expert here but you can try switching it off with xrandr, that should be just fine if it reacts like a normal screen (no driving output -> standby) To have it work with pulling the display in and out I guess acpi needs to switch on and off the screen, the kernel/xorg stack should handle hotplug itself then.
