Make sure thinkpad-acpi is loaded with the "enable=0" parameter (which will
disable any and all mixer functionality in thinkpad-acpi).  Does that change
anything?

Note: reloading thinkpad-acpi with enable=0 is not enough for this test,
you must not let it load without the parameter.
