I've recompiled the kernel with thinkpad-acpi as module:

$ dmesg | grep thinkpad_acpi
[ 29.580330] thinkpad_acpi: ThinkPad ACPI Extras v0.23-20091227
[ 29.580333] thinkpad_acpi: http://ibm-acpi.sf.net/
[ 29.580334] thinkpad_acpi: ThinkPad BIOS 7UET70WW (3.00 ), EC
7VHT14WW-1.03
[ 29.580336] thinkpad_acpi: Lenovo ThinkPad T400, model 2767WC8
[ 29.580720] thinkpad_acpi: radio switch found; radios are enabled
[ 29.580811] thinkpad_acpi: This ThinkPad has standard ACPI backlight
brightness control, supported by the ACPI video driver
[ 29.580813] thinkpad_acpi: Disabling thinkpad-acpi brightness events
by default...
[ 29.585161] thinkpad_acpi: rfkill switch tpacpi_bluetooth_sw: radio
is blocked
[ 29.588608] thinkpad_acpi: rfkill switch tpacpi_wwan_sw: radio is blocked
[ 29.591760] thinkpad_acpi: Standard ACPI backlight interface
available, not loading native one.
[ 29.592024] thinkpad_acpi: Console audio control enabled, mode:
monitor (read only)
[ 29.610679] input: ThinkPad Extra Buttons as

By the way the mute botton stopped working.
