Look at the keycode stream coming from the keyboard. You will find
the volume up/down keys there.  They don't go through ACPI anymore,
since the T61.

There is nothing I can do about it, other than enhance thinkpad-acpi
to not provide a volume up/down control that doesn't work on these
thinkpads.

And it doesn't work, because they don't have a volume mixer for the
speakers anymore.  They just have a mute gate for the speakers.
