I've bound mute and volume keys to amixer:

corsac@hidalgo: amixer set Master toggle
Simple mixer control 'Master',0
  Capabilities: pvolume pvolume-joined pswitch pswitch-joined
  Playback channels: Mono
  Limits: Playback 0 - 39
  Mono: Playback 39 [100%] [0.00dB] [off]
corsac@hidalgo: amixer set Master toggle
Simple mixer control 'Master',0
  Capabilities: pvolume pvolume-joined pswitch pswitch-joined
  Playback channels: Mono
  Limits: Playback 0 - 39
  Mono: Playback 39 [100%] [0.00dB] [on]
